Questions about salsa classes

What is my level?

Our level system in short:

  • Beginners 1, 2, 3: for people just starting out. Each course takes about 12 weeks; after Beginners 1–3 you have around 9 months of experience.
  • Improvers 1, 2, 3: for dancers who know the basics. After Improvers 1–3 you have about 1.5 years of experience in total.
  • Intermediate: usually for dancers with about 2 years of consistent classes and practice.
  • Advanced: for dancers with more than 2 years of solid experience, ready for more challenging material.
Do I need a dance partner to sign up?

No, you can sign up on your own. We rotate partners regularly during class so everyone dances with everyone. Coming with a fixed partner and prefer not to rotate? That's fine too.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothes you can move in. Shoes with a smooth sole (no rubber or grippy sneakers) are ideal. As an absolute beginner you don't need special dance shoes yet.

I've never danced before. Can I join?

Absolutely! Our beginner classes teach you the basics step by step. Everyone can start.

When do new courses start?

We work with fixed seasons. You'll find exact start dates in the class schedule. Joining mid-season is often possible too.

Is salsa hard to learn?

Not at all! Our teachers are enthusiastic and patient and guide you at your own pace. Most people find the very beginning exciting, but once they experience the classes it gets much easier. Don't be afraid to make mistakes: we all do, teachers included!

What's the difference between salsa and bachata?

Salsa and bachata are two different dance and music styles. Bachata is generally slower, and you travel much less across the floor than in salsa.

How long does it take to learn salsa?

It depends on your background and how often you take classes and practise. After Beginners 1 you can already dance salsa; after Beginners 3 you'll feel confident at a party. We recommend two classes a week and at least two social nights a month.

Do you teach kizomba?

No, we teach salsa and bachata. We don't offer kizomba.

How do I change or cancel my subscription?

Use the form on the 'Change subscription' page to change, pause or cancel your subscription. The notice period is one month.

What is salsa dancing?

Salsa is a dance from Cuba, danced to salsa music. You dance it as a couple, with lots of quick, elegant moves and plenty of spins. Read more on our salsa page.

Do I need special dance shoes?

Not as an absolute beginner. At higher levels we definitely recommend salsa shoes for ladies. Men spin less and don't strictly need them, but dance shoes are recommended for advanced men too. In Arnhem we recommend Ready to Dance (readytodance.nl), specialists in dance shoes.

Is salsa good for losing weight?

Salsa is great cardio, so it definitely helps. The best part: it's fun. Time flies while you dance, and you burn plenty of calories along the way.
